Visit of the President of Purdue University at the National Technical University of Athens establishing strategic bilateral cooperation

The President of the Purdue University, Prof. Mung Chiang, accompanied by an academic delegation, visited the National Technical University of Athens on Tuesday, May 30th, 2023, to sign an official agreement between Purdue and NTUA. The Purdue delegation was welcomed by the Rector of the National Technical University of Athens, Prof. Andreas Boudouvis, and the Vice Rectors, Prof. Evangelos Sapountzakis and Prof. Ioannis Chatjigeorgiou.

 

The NTUA Rector, Prof. Andreas Boudouvis, described a series of interinstitutional meetings further discussing specific programs between Purdue and NTUA. During the delegation visit, bilateral departmental meetings mapped a long list of potential collaborations and learning opportunities in undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral level. The Rector described the NTUA competitiveness in Research and Innovation and expressed the eagerness to sustainable reciprocal interactions with a distinguished American University like Purdue - ranked 4th Graduate Engineering Program in the US - by creating small success stories that will establish new trends.

 

The Purdue University President, Prof. Mung Chiang, emphasized that “Purdue University cannot imagine a stronger partner for student exchange, than the best Greek Technical University”. He expressed certainty that the substance of the initiatives will establish pipelines for student exchange, ensuring connection with the home university. Purdue University is a top Ƶ for international students, also providing a world-class online education, and as Senior Vice President for Purdue University Online, Prof. Dimitris Peroulis, stressed, joint online courses are a priority as well. Greek Alumni that are faculty members in both Universities are enthusiastic to take the signing of the agreement to the establishment of vibrant student and staff programs, as Prof. Peri Paschou exclaimed.

 

The delegations’ discussions have led to the issue of brain drain to brain gain and the assurance that the exchanges will ensure the connection to the home university by combining study abroad with internship programs, through elaborating part of their studies or PhD within future workplaces. Specific bilateral programs that will be organized are reciprocal and include short period exchanges on the undergraduate level within the elaboration of projects and thesis, attendance of Master programs at Purdue and NTUA with preferential treatment leading to the acceptance in doctoral programs, thesis co-supervision leading to the elaboration of Joint and Dual PhD degrees, and specialized internship programs.

 

The Purdue delegation of President Mung Chiang included Prof. Dimitris Peroulis, Prof. Peri Paschou, Prof. Pavlos Vlachos, Prof. Petros Drineas, Prof. Lefteri Tsoukalas, and Mrs. Alyssa Wilcox. The NTUA Rectorate was accompanied by Dean Nektarios Kozyris, Dean Glykeria Kakali, Dean Stavros Kourkoulis, Prof. Eleni Vlachogianni, Prof. Konstantinos Mathioudakis, Ass. Prof. Konstantinos Kepaptsoglou, Ass. Prof. Ioannis Zevgolis and Mrs. Antonia Lampropoulou. The visit of the President of Purdue University at the National Technical University of Athens was described as impactful, establishing a strategic bilateral cooperation by creating trusted bridges of human interaction between Purdue and NTUA, that intends to create sustainable exchange paths to attract talented students that want to expand their knowledge and skills to address global challenges.
