The National Technical University of Athens cooperates with the Green Fund for the protection of marine ecosystems

On Tuesday, February 11, members of the NTUA research and academic community presented actions and results of the project "INTRICATE Innovative circular economy practices in plastic fish farming nets for the protection of marine ecosystems".

 

President of the Green Fund, Mr. I. Androulakis and the General Secretary of Natural Environment at the Ministry of Environment and Energy, Mr. P. Varelidis attended the event.

 

The project was implemented by the School of Naval Mechanical Engineering of NTUA and was financed by the Green Fund Program "Natural Environment & Innovative Actions 2023".

 

NTUA Rector and Scientific Head, Professor Ioannis K. Hatzigeorgiou and the research team, presented the project in the context of which the design of open sea fish cages, the adoption of innovative materials for the construction of nets, the possibilities of recycling  nets, as well as proposals regarding their recycling, were studied, with the involvement of all relevant parties.

 

The President of the Green Fund Mr. I. Androulakis and the General Secretary Mr. P. Varelidis,  congratulated the Project Team for their work, which marks a new chapter in the exploitation of new technologies in the field of fish farming, for the development of the fish industry and the protection of marine ecosystems based on sustainability and social responsibility.
